1 · Position
A casino at Urca beneath the Sugarloaf, ⚑ opened in 1933, in a building put up in 1922 as the Balneário Hotel. This entry said 1930 and had no source for it; the earlier date is withdrawn here rather than quietly overwritten, so that anyone who read the page before today can see what changed, part of the same Rio gambling era as the Copacabana Palace and ended by the same national prohibition.
2 · Why it is in the Library
⚑ It is held as a companion to LHL-S-181 so that the prohibition can be seen for what it was: not a decision about one house but the closing of an entire national category overnight. That is rare enough to be worth the group.
3 · ⚑ Candour
The opening year, 1930, was already in the Library’s build; I wrote that it was unknown without looking. Ownership, the performers who worked there and what became of the building remain unestablished.
