An independent register · On the record
Who made the world of luxury hospitality
The houses, brands, owners, people and events that built the industry — hotel brands and corporate portfolios, iconic houses, private islands, trains, yachts and branded residences, the bars and restaurants that became institutions in their own right, and the people behind all of them. Every entry carries a permanent code, is grouped by how a house operates rather than where it stands, and names who it is wrong for. Written for the people who work in this industry, research it or write about it.
Names, codes and countries across every part of the register. Or browse by country, by person, by who owns it, or by when it happened.

What an entry looks like
Three specimensCheval Blanc
Six Maisons in twenty years — the LVMH house that made slow expansion the operating model itself, not a stage on the way to scale.
Read the entry →Adrian Zecha
The one person in the register who invented a category by subtraction, while every luxury hotel of the 1980s was competing on addition.
Read the entry →Harry's Bar, Venice
One room off the Grand Canal, open since 1931: two of the century’s most copied inventions and a hospitality dynasty out of a single address.
Read the entry →A brand, a person, a house that is a single room. Every one of them also carries a paragraph naming who it is wrong for — a requirement of the editorial standard, not a matter of the writer’s mood. A reference work that only praises is a brochure, and a brochure cannot help you choose between two houses that both look perfect in photographs.
Three rules the register runs on
Editorial standardOne code each. Nothing moves. Everything else about this register follows from that sentence — what it admits, how it is ordered, and what it is willing to say out loud.
The code outlives the structure
LHL-021 is Aman and will never be anything else. Volumes get reorganised, brands change owners, entries are withdrawn — a retired code is never reissued.
Model before geography
Houses are grouped by how they operate. Country is a field you filter on, never a chapter — which is why a Greek boutique collection sits beside a French one.
Every entry names who it is wrong for
A reference work that only praises is a brochure, and a brochure cannot help you choose between two houses that both look perfect in photographs.
